Too Many Items, or TMI, put every Minecraft item one click away. Open your inventory and a sidebar listed every item in the game. Left-click one for a full stack, right-click for a single item. Marglyph’s own pitch was short: “Create & customize items, including those not available even in creative mode.”

TMI stopped at Minecraft 1.8. Marglyph opened the thread on January 23, 2011, back in the Beta days, and last edited it on February 14, 2015, for a 1.8 bug-fix build. The thread is now locked, and it lists no build for 1.9 or any later version. Its successors are Not Enough Items, which also stopped, and Just Enough Items, which is still updated.

We first covered Too Many Items here in 2014, in a post about its update for Minecraft 1.8. This page replaces that post. Nobody here has played TMI or its successors for this update; every fact comes from the official pages, checked on October 16, 2026.

What Too Many Items did

TMI was an in-game inventory editor. You pressed O in the inventory screen to show or hide it. The thread lists these tools:

  • Item sidebar. Every item, with a click for a full stack or one item. In single-player, Shift-left-click gave an unlimited stack or a tool that never broke.
  • Enchant panel. Plus and minus buttons set each enchantment level, and the Create button made the item. Potions and fireworks had their own panels.
  • Favorites. A tab for the items you spawned most.
  • Save states. In single-player, you saved your whole inventory to a slot and loaded it again later.
  • Toolbar. Icons switched survival, creative and adventure mode, set the time to sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight, changed the difficulty and filled your health and hunger.
  • Trash. Drop a stack on the trash icon to delete it. Shift-click the icon to empty your whole inventory.
  • Fast crafting. A right-click on the crafting output made as many as your materials allowed.

It also worked in multiplayer, if you were a server operator. TMI sent the server a give command, which you set in its config file, TooManyItems.txt.

The 1.8 update

The last version added the new 1.8 items and a fuzzy search: type “rcmp” and you got the redstone comparator. Enter spawned the top result. Custom items now included colored leather, player heads, signs with text, filled flower pots and preset note blocks. The panel moved into a sidebar so it no longer covered potion effects. You could switch to spectator mode, and unlimited stacks, keep items on death and prevent rain became global settings. The changelog also notes, deadpan, “Removed Herobrine spawner”.

Version support

TMI came in two forms: a Forge mod and a jar mod for players without Forge.

Too Many Items builds listed in the Minecraft Forum thread
Minecraft Builds
1.8 Forge and jar mod, last updated February 14, 2015
1.7.10 Forge and non-Forge
1.7.9 Non-Forge
1.7.2 Forge and non-Forge
1.6.1 to 1.6.4 Forge and non-Forge; use 1.6.4 Forge only with an older Forge release
1.0.0 to 1.5.2 One build for most versions
Beta 1.5_01 to the 1.0 release candidates One build for most versions
1.9 and newer None

One more limit matters for modpacks. TMI is “free for personal use only”, and the thread says not to redistribute it, “including in mod packs”.

What replaced it

Mod Newest Minecraft Last update Status
Too Many Items 1.8 February 2015 Stopped
Not Enough Items 1.12.2 August 2019 Stopped, repository archived
Just Enough Items 26.3 October 2026 Active

Not Enough Items

Not Enough Items, or NEI, by Chicken_Bones, was the next step. Its CurseForge summary reads “Recipe Viewer, Inventory Manager, Item Spawner, Cheats and more”, so it did TMI’s job and also showed recipes. The original project’s last file is for 1.7.10, from May 23, 2016. A second project, later run by covers1624, carried NEI to 1.12.2, with a last file on August 6, 2019. The GitHub repository is archived, so NEI is finished too.

Just Enough Items

For any current version, install Just Enough Items. JEI shows every item and its recipes, and it has a cheat mode that does what TMI’s sidebar did: a click gives you a full stack. It runs on NeoForge, Fabric and Forge, up to Minecraft 26.3. Our JEI guide covers its keys, cheat mode and server setup.

The easiest way to add JEI is a launcher with a built-in mod browser. Our Prism Launcher guide shows how.

Pros

  • Every item one click away, including items creative mode lacked
  • Save states for whole inventories
  • Time, game mode and difficulty on one toolbar

Cons

  • No update since February 2015
  • Stops at Minecraft 1.8
  • No recipe view, and no permission to ship it in modpacks

Verdict

1.0 out of 5

Too Many Items was a handy item editor in its day, but it rates low for installing today because it stops at Minecraft 1.8. Install Just Enough Items and use its cheat mode instead.
