Escape the Puzzlemaster: a classic Minecraft puzzle map

One of the early Minecraft puzzle maps: the Puzzlemaster kidnaps you and you solve tests to escape. Eight versions, from Beta 1.7.3 to Minecraft 1.3.1.

· tamaMinecraft

Escape the Puzzlemaster is one of the early Minecraft puzzle maps, first released for Beta 1.7.3 in September 2011. Its makers, Ditto64, crazykille and kobs222, kept it updated through eight versions, up to version 1.7 for Minecraft 1.3.1. The forum thread title now counts more than 207,000 downloads. We first covered it here in 2014, in a post whose address named Beta 1.7.3. Only its title survives.

Nobody here has played Escape the Puzzlemaster for this rebuild. Every fact below comes from the creators’ Minecraft Forum thread, read through Wayback Machine copies and checked on October 16, 2026.

What the map is

The premise fits in two lines of the thread: “You’ve been kidnapped by the Puzzlemaster! The Evil Puzzlemaster sends you through a multitude of tests and puzzles.” The question it leaves you with is whether you defeat the Puzzlemaster “or will you die trying?”

Ditto64 posted the thread on September 5, 2011, and asked players for feedback. A few details from it:

  • In multiplayer, players spawn in a mossy cobblestone room.
  • The team ran a score leaderboard for a while, then retired it because it grew too large.
  • The map is built on a flat world, and the thread offers that flatland map as a separate download.
  • The screenshots use the Bordercraft texture pack, but the map does not need it.

The same team made a second map, ShrinkCraft, for Minecraft 1.2.5 in April 2012. Its thread credits them as “the creators of Escape The Puzzlemaster”.

Versions

The creators kept every old download in the thread, one for each Minecraft version they supported:

Escape the Puzzlemaster releases, from the creators’ thread
Minecraft Map version Note
1.3.1 1.7 Last release
1.2.4, 1.2.5 1.6
1.1 1.5
1.0.0 1.4 Marked “(Broken)”
Beta 1.9 pre-release 1.3
Beta 1.8.1 1.2 and 1.1
Beta 1.7.3 1.0 First release

Nothing newer than 1.3.1 came from the team, and the thread does not say whether the map works on later versions. To play it as built, use 1.3.1 for the last version or Beta 1.7.3 for the first.

How to play it safely

Use only the downloads linked from the creators’ thread. Planet Minecraft has uploads with the same name from members who are not in the creator list, and copies on other sites are not checked by anyone. A map download should hold a world folder, not an .exe file.

The thread’s links go through AdFly, an ad link service; the creators tell you to wait for the “SKIP AD” button in the top right corner. Click only that button, and close any page that asks you to install something.

Prism Launcher can run both 1.3.1 and Beta 1.7.3 in their own instances, apart from your other worlds. Our Prism Launcher guide covers the basics.

  1. In Prism, click Add Instance. For version 1.7, pick 1.3.1 from the Releases list. For version 1.0, tick Betas under Filter and pick b1.7.3.
  2. Click OK. Prism uses Java 8 for both versions. Leave “Autodetect Java version” on, or install Java 8 yourself.
  3. Launch the instance once, then close the game.
  4. Extract the map download.
  5. Right-click the instance, choose Edit, open Worlds and click View Folder. Copy the world folder in.
  6. Start the game and load the world.
