Wonderland: an Alice in Wonderland map for Minecraft 1.8

rsmalec's Alice in Wonderland adventure map for Minecraft: seven minutes of narration, hidden characters, strict rules, and a 1.8 resource pack update.

· tamaMinecraft

Wonderland is an Alice in Wonderland adventure map for Minecraft by rsmalec. It opens with a Lewis Carroll quote, and it has more than seven minutes of recorded narration, characters hidden in chests, and rules about not stepping on the Mome Raths. In November 2014 rsmalec updated it for Minecraft 1.8 and moved the narration into a resource pack. That same month we first covered it here, in a post titled “Alice in Wonderland” whose address named version 1.8. Only the title survives.

Nobody here has played Wonderland for this rebuild. Every fact below comes from rsmalec’s CurseForge page and Minecraft Forum thread, read through Wayback Machine copies and checked on October 16, 2026.

What the map is

rsmalec calls it “a new twist on a familiar theme”. The feature list on both pages is the same:

  • Over seven minutes of recorded narration, played at checkpoints.
  • “Carefully sequenced loot progression”.
  • A side challenge: find all the characters hidden in chests.
  • Three custom skins.
  • “Heart-pounding action”. For the story, rsmalec recommends Peaceful, and warns that “even ‘easy’ can be difficult”.

The download includes a “WONDERLAND README.PDF”, and the forum post asks you to read it.

The dates do not quite agree. The 1.8 description says the map “was originally created in April 2010”. The forum thread, though, is dated April 4, 2011, and rsmalec announced “v1.0 released on schedule!” on April 9, 2011. By the end of 2011 it was at version 1.9.

The rules

The map only works if you play it the way it was built. rsmalec’s rules, in short:

  • Do not mine or break blocks. You may break glass, mob spawners and torches, and any block you placed yourself, levers included.
  • Blocks you pick up can be barricades or shelters, but not stairs or bridges.
  • Water buckets are fine. Lava buckets are not.
  • No crafting tables, except to make a bow or arrows. Anything that fits the 2×2 inventory grid, such as torches, is allowed.
  • “DO NOT step on the Mome Raths!”

The 1.8 update and newer versions

The CurseForge page lists two files. “Wonderland_1_9.zip” is for Minecraft 1.0.0 and dates from December 21, 2013, when the project went up. “Wonderland v1.82.zip” is for Minecraft 1.8 and dates from November 7, 2014. The forum post was last edited the same day.

The 1.8 version uses “a custom resource pack for audio narration”. In single player, that pack is embedded in the world save and loads by itself. In multiplayer, every player must take the resources.zip file from the archive and install it.

rsmalec lists no version newer than 1.8, and neither page says whether the map works on current Minecraft. If you want the narration as built, play it on 1.8.

How to play Wonderland safely

Download the map only from rsmalec’s CurseForge page. Reuploads on other sites are not checked by anyone, and a map download should hold a world folder, a resources.zip and the README, not an .exe file.

Prism Launcher can run 1.8 in its own instance, apart from your other worlds. Our Prism Launcher guide covers the basics.

  1. In Prism, click Add Instance, pick 1.8 from the Releases list and click OK.
  2. Prism uses Java 8 for this version. Leave “Autodetect Java version” on, or install Java 8 yourself.
  3. Launch the instance once, then close the game.
  4. Extract the map download.
  5. Right-click the instance, choose Edit, open Worlds and click View Folder. Copy the world folder in.
  6. Start the game and load the world. In single player the narration pack loads with it.
  7. For multiplayer, open Resource Packs in each player’s instance, click Add File and pick resources.zip.
