The Orphanage: REMO’s horror map for Minecraft 1.7.2

A horror map for Minecraft 1.7.2 by REMO: an orphanage, jumpscares, a bundled texture pack, strict rules, and a 2023 port for newer versions.

· tamaMinecraft

The Orphanage is a horror map for Minecraft 1.7.2, built by a mapmaker who signs as REMO and posts on Planet Minecraft as omerci. You run out of gas on a night drive, walk until you find shelter, and the only building nearby is an orphanage. The creator promised jumpscares, custom sounds and textures, and no blindness effect. We first covered it here in 2014, in a post called “The Orphanage A Horror Maps”. Only that title survives.

Nobody here has played The Orphanage for this rebuild. Every fact below comes from the creator’s Planet Minecraft page and one port page, read through Wayback Machine copies and checked on October 16, 2026.

What the map is

The setup is short. You have been on the road for more than seven hours, you are tired, and the radio is on. Then the car runs out of gas. You walk, hoping to find help, “But the only place you can shelter is an orphanage.”

The creator calls it “the scariest map of minecraft history” and lists what you get:

  • Lots of jumpscares and a scary atmosphere.
  • A custom sound and texture pack, bundled with the map.
  • No blindness effect, which the page singles out as “the best thing about this map”.
  • A story told through books and conversations.

Some textures come from the “Silent Hill” texture pack, and the page credits its maker. That does not mean you should install it: one rule says “Do not use Silenthill texture pack! it is diffrent”. Use the pack in the map download.

The page title claims more than 1,250,000 downloads across all sites. Planet Minecraft’s own counter showed 84,337 downloads in July 2026.

The creator’s rules

Horror maps break when you dig through a wall, so the page sets rules:

  • Do not place or break blocks.
  • Make sure command blocks are on.
  • Play in Adventure mode. On 1.8, play in Survival instead.
  • Do not use third-party mods or apps, and do not use cheats.
  • Read every book you find and follow the conversations.
  • If you get lost, type /tp -67 23 212.

The reminders are blunt. Use the restroom first, do not play if you are under 12, turn the lights off and wear headphones. With friends, only one player sees the conversations, but everyone hears the same sounds.

Does it run on current Minecraft?

REMO built the map for 1.7.2. The only newer version the page mentions is 1.8, in the game-mode rule above. The creator gives no word on anything later.

For newer versions, another member made a port. “The Orphanage Updated” by WhoAteMyButter went up on Planet Minecraft on February 18, 2023. Its page calls it “an updated port of The Orphanage by omerci” with “the same functionality as the original”, for “any version past 1.18”. The resource pack is bundled with the world, so you do not install it separately. REMO did not make this port, so treat it as a separate project.

How to play the original safely

Get the map only from REMO’s Planet Minecraft page. The comments there point to at least one reupload by someone else, and copies on other sites can carry anything. A real map download holds a world folder and a pack, not an .exe file.

Prism Launcher can run 1.7.2 in its own instance, apart from your other worlds. Our Prism Launcher guide covers the basics.

  1. In Prism, click Add Instance, pick 1.7.2 from the Releases list and click OK.
  2. Prism uses Java 8 for this version. Leave “Autodetect Java version” on, or install Java 8 yourself.
  3. Launch the instance once, then close the game.
  4. Extract the map download.
  5. Right-click the instance, choose Edit, open Worlds and click View Folder. Copy the world folder in.
  6. Open Resource Packs, click Add File and pick the texture pack from the download.
  7. Start the game, turn the pack on under Options, Resource Packs, and load the world.

To play the port on a current version instead, follow the same steps with a newer Minecraft version, and skip the resource pack step.
