Waila Mod Review
Waila Mod is a very useful mod to have in the game. It’s a UI improvement mod aimed at providing block information directly ingame, without the need of opening an UI. Minecraft uses a multitude of elements that come from vanilla and the numerous mods it supports. As a result, it is easy for players to get confused with some of the items or resources they see in the game. Some blocks are easy to recognize especially if they have detailed textures that set them apart. Unfortunately, some are much harder to distinguish. Depending on the colors of the blocks would not help much as multiple blocks implemented by different mods may use the same shade of that color.
Waila Mod lessens the confusion by helping players recognize the element they want to identify. In fact, Waila is an acronym for What Am I Looking At. And that is basically what the mod does. It tells you what the block or element is. It does this with a tooltip display that shows the information you need, such as the name and what mod it came from. For example, if you hover over a red block, it identifies that it is Destabilized Redstone implemented by Thermal Expansion. This means you will not mistake it for something else and you know exactly what mod it came from.
Aside from basic information, such as block details, Waila also identifies control keys that are used in the game. These are the defaulted shortcuts for various functions. Without Waila, it may be hard to remember which mod specified that the key should be used for that function. For example, F9 is a key used by a lot of mods for different functions. But in the image below, you can see that in this particular game, F9 is utilized by Dimensional to show force-loaded chunks. You can also see that the “M” key is used by Opis to open map GUI. Dimensional and Opis are two of the mods loaded in this specific Minecraft game.
Waila Mod is also useful in the agricultural aspect of the game. You can check the progress or maturity of the seeds you planted. By hovering over the crop, you can see how far along they are so you can determine when you can start harvesting. In the image example below, you can see that the carrots are only half-grown. You can also see that this food item is implemented by vanilla.
You can also get information about mobs that are wandering about. And like resource blocks, the tooltip display will also show the mod it comes from.
Tooltip displays can also include more information than just the name of the element and the mod. It can also show the content, the capacity, the input and output, and many other details. In addition to the tooltip display, Waila can also show you how you craft a specific item or what recipe it can be used for. This can be an extremely helpful feature that can save you time. You don’t need to look for crafting tables or any other resource to get the recipe.
