Inventory Tweaks fixed the most boring part of Minecraft: the inventory. One click or keystroke sorted your inventory or a chest. When a tool broke, it swapped in a fresh one from your bag, and when a stack ran out, it refilled the slot. With more than 143 million downloads on CurseForge, plenty of players wanted exactly that.
Inventory Tweaks is dead. Its last release, 1.63 for Minecraft 1.12.2, came out on September 21, 2017. The GitHub repository was archived on April 7, 2020, and the maintainers say there are “no plans” to support Minecraft 1.13 or newer, because it would need a major rewrite. Their advice is to “explore alternatives” for those versions.
This is a refresh of our old Inventory Tweaks review. Nobody here has played the successors for this update; every fact comes from the official project pages, checked on October 16, 2026.
What Inventory Tweaks did
The CurseForge page sums it up as “tweaks to inventory handling for ease of use, including sorting”. In practice that meant three things:
- Sorting. It sorted your inventory and your chests “in a single click/keystroke”. You could change the sort order completely through its configuration files.
- Auto-refill. It “automatically replaces your tools as they break, and item stacks once emptied”.
- Shortcuts. Extra keyboard and mouse shortcuts for moving items between inventories.
It was a client mod for Forge. The README says it was built to be customizable and to support popular mods “without being annoying to set up”.

Inventory Profiles Next
Inventory Profiles Next, or IPN, is the closest thing to a full replacement. Its feature list reads like the old one: keep your inventory sorted, “replace your quasi-broken tool”, dump everything into a chest with one click, move the items you carry that are already in the chest, and lock slots so sorting leaves them alone. It also has gear sets and profiles, and custom sorting rules. It is “pure client-side, so that it works everywhere”, including servers that do not have it.
The developers say plainly that IPN “IS NOT drop in replacement of Inventory Tweaks”, so do not expect your old config to carry over. IPN also needs libIPN on every loader, plus Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin on Fabric.
Mouse Tweaks
Mouse Tweaks makes the mouse smarter. Right-click dragging drops one item in each slot you pass over, and another each time you drag over the same slot again. Left-click dragging with an item picks up or moves stacks of the same item in one motion, and Shift plus a left-click drag moves items into the other inventory fast. The scroll wheel moves items one at a time down, or in bulk up. It is client-only and has no dependencies. It does not sort, so you add it next to a sorting mod, not instead of one.
Inventory Sorter
Inventory Sorter, by cpw, keeps it simple: “Middle click sorts, mousewheel in and out of inventory one item at a time.” Its current builds are for NeoForge up to Minecraft 26.3; the last Forge build is for 1.20.1. It must be installed on both the client and the server.
Which one should you pick?
- You want the old Inventory Tweaks feeling, sorting plus tool swaps: IPN.
- You only want quicker item moving with the mouse: Mouse Tweaks.
- You run a NeoForge server and want one-button sorting with no setup: Inventory Sorter.
How to install Inventory Profiles Next
Our 2014 posts had you copy jars into .minecraft/mods by hand. A launcher does that part now. We use Prism Launcher here because it is free, open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Install Prism Launcher and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Create an instance for your Minecraft version.
- Select it, click Edit, open the Version tab and add a loader: NeoForge, Fabric, Quilt or Forge.
- Open the Mods tab, click Download Mods and search for “Inventory Profiles Next”.
- Add libIPN. On Fabric or Quilt, also add Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin.
- Add Mouse Tweaks too, if you want it.
- Click OK and launch the game. IPN is client-only, so the server needs nothing.
