Half-Life 2 mods: where to find and install them

Half-Life 2 mods come from three places: the in-game Workshop, free mods on Steam and the sourcemods folder. Here is how each one works.

Half-Life 2 was one of the first games we covered. In January 2013 our Editors Choice went to Suicide Survival, a Half-Life 2: Deathmatch mod, and the reviewer admitted: “I’m completely addicted to this Half Life 2 Deathmatch mod.” More than a decade later, people still make mods for Valve’s 2004 shooter, and getting them is easier than it was then.

You can get Half-Life 2 mods in three ways: the Steam Workshop inside the game, free mods with their own Steam store page, and mods you download elsewhere and copy into the sourcemods folder. This guide covers all three, with a list of well-known mods on Steam.

Nobody here has played these mods for this guide. Every fact comes from Valve’s update notes, the Steam store pages and Valve’s developer documentation, checked on October 16, 2026.

What changed in November 2024

Valve’s 20th Anniversary Update on November 15, 2024 changed how the game handles mods. The parts that matter for modding:

  • Steam Workshop is built in. In Valve’s words: “Browse, install, and play user-created content for Half-Life 2 without ever leaving the game. Look for it in the Extras menu!” The Workshop holds whole campaigns and smaller changes to weapons, enemies and the interface.
  • The episodes are in the box. Half-Life 2 now includes Episode One and Episode Two, and Lost Coast sits in the Extras menu. The old standalone versions stay available for “community projects that rely on them”, but they now appear under Tools in your Steam library.
  • Gamepad interface. Big Picture mode now uses the gamepad interface from Steam Deck, and the -gamepadui launch option turns it on anywhere. Our Steam Deck mods guide covers modding on the Deck.
  • The old build is kept. The pre-update game is in a public beta branch named steam_legacy. Valve says that if a mod behaves in an unexpected way, “you may need to run this archived build until the issue is resolved”.

Later fixes in November 2024 handled Workshop mods that loaded as the wrong episode, corrupt add-ons and weapon reskins for the stunstick.

How to install Half-Life 2 mods

From the Steam Workshop

This is the easiest way and the one Valve now builds for.

  1. Install or update Half-Life 2 on Steam.
  2. Start the game and open the Extras menu.
  3. Browse the Workshop there and install the content you want.
  4. If a mod breaks after a game update, open the game’s properties in Steam, choose the steam_legacy beta and try again.

Mods with their own Steam page

Many larger mods are on the Steam store as free products. You install them like a game, and they show up in your library. Valve’s rules for Source engine mods say they “must be configured to require ownership of the base game”, so you need the game the mod is built on. For an Episode Two mod, that can mean the episodes too. Entropy : Zero, for example, says “You must own Half-Life 2 + Episode 1 & Episode 2” and also needs Source SDK 2013. Read the requirements on each store page.

Mods from outside Steam

Older and smaller mods often come as a download from the author’s site or a mod host. These go in the sourcemods folder inside your Steam steamapps folder. Valve’s developer wiki explains: “Usually, a Source mod that isn’t available on Steam can be manually placed here. Steam will recognize a non-Steam mod if it is in this folder and the mod is configured properly.”

  1. Download the mod and extract it. You should get one folder with a gameinfo.txt file inside.
  2. Copy that folder into steamapps/sourcemods.
  3. Install the base the mod’s readme names, for example Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer, from your Steam library.
  4. Restart Steam. The mod appears in your library.

Only download from the mod author’s own page or a host the author links to.

Half-Life 2 mods on Steam

These mods have their own pages on the Steam store. The release date is the Steam release, which can be later than the mod’s first version.

  • You want to play with friends: Synergy.
  • You want small changes, such as a new weapon model: the Workshop in the Extras menu.
