“This Skyrim mod is probably incredibly well known by now, and really it should be.” Our December 2012 review of Deadly Dragons opened with that line. The mod has one goal, in its authors’ words: to “make dragons the feared & powerful creatures they supposedly are”. It adds new dragon types, lets you set how tough dragons are, and can send dragons after you on a timer.

Deadly Dragons is still updated. The Special Edition page got version 7.0.0 in May 2026 and 7.3.1 on August 31, 2026. The original Skyrim page stopped at 6.4.1b in March 2016. The mod first went up on Nexus Mods on December 16, 2011.

This is a refresh of our old review. Nobody here has played Skyrim with Deadly Dragons for this update. Every fact comes from the two official Nexus Mods pages and their file notes, checked on October 16, 2026.

What Deadly Dragons changes

New dragon types

The mod adds new dragon types to the leveled lists, from level 10 up to level 65. The higher your level, the stronger the dragons you meet, and each type has its own attacks and look. The page lists the Magma Dragon, Storm Dragon, Dracolich, Spectral Dragon, Wyvern and Aspect of Alduin, among others. Version 6.5.0 added frost and fire versions of existing dragons, so every dragon from Skyrim, Dawnguard and Dragonborn is now covered.

Fire, frost and shock dragons resist 50% of their own element, and undead dragons resist 50% of poison and disease. Breath attacks set the ground on fire or leave ice shards behind.

If you want no new dragons, choose the Loremonger Edition. It keeps every setting but adds no new dragon types.

Settings in the MCM

All settings are in SkyUI’s Mod Configuration Menu (MCM); our SkyUI guide explains it. Every value starts at the base game’s default, so nothing changes until you change it.

  • Custom settings: separate sliders for health, magicka and stamina, melee damage, armor rating, magic resistance and magic damage.
  • Difficulty: presets that set those sliders for you.
  • Stagger: dragons become immune to the Impact perk, and shield bashes and power attacks get only a 50% chance to stagger them.
  • Level scaling: dragons below your level get extra health and damage.
  • Knockdown: sets whether a dragon knocks you down when it lands on you.
  • Combat behavior: No landing, Less flying or Default.

The sliders go far. The page’s own example is dragons “with 50,000 health that deal more than four times the damage of Legendary Dragons”.

Assault events

Assault is an extra dragon spawner on a timer. You set the base time in game hours, a random range on top, and whether one or several dragons appear. Safe zones keep it out of the major hold capitals and some dungeons. The page suggests 48 to 96 hours with a 12/36-hour random range. Normal spawns stay as they are: “Deadly Dragons does NOT change dragon spawn rates or locations in any way, shape, or form.”

Versions and requirements

Deadly Dragons main files on Nexus Mods, checked October 16, 2026
Game Version Released Needs
Skyrim Special Edition and Anniversary Edition 7.3.1 August 31, 2026 SkyUI, Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch, SKSE64 2.2.5 or newer (or powerofthree’s Papyrus Extender on older game versions)
Skyrim, the 2011 original 6.4.1b March 2, 2016 Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn, SkyUI, SKSE 1.6.16 or newer, Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch

The page calls these requirements “non-negotiable”. There will be no version without SKSE, the Unofficial Patch or SkyUI.

The 7.3.1 file note names game version 1.6.1130 and newer. Bethesda released Skyrim update 1.7.99 on Steam on August 20, 2026. Deadly Dragons depends on SKSE64, so before you update the game, check that SKSE64 has a build for the new version. Our Special Edition vs Anniversary Edition guide explains the version numbers.

Compatibility

  • Works by default: Diverse Dragons Collection, Splendor – Dragon Variants and Bellyaches New Dragon Species. Optional patches add the first two to the Assault spawns.
  • Not supported: KS Dragon Overhaul 2. The page says it “should now be used instead of DD and not with”.
  • Not recommended: Enhanced Mighty Dragons and similar mods. Together they “can result in virtually un-killable dragons”.
  • Patches: its dragons are in the leveled lists, so carry them into any bashed or merged patch you build.

How to install Deadly Dragons

The page’s own install guide is one line: “Download, activate, and organize with a mod manager of your choice.” In more detail:

  1. Install SKSE64 for your game version, then SkyUI and the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.
  2. On an older game version such as 1.5.97, add powerofthree’s Papyrus Extender too.
  3. Download Deadly Dragons from its Nexus Mods page with your mod manager. Choose the standard version or the Loremonger Edition.
  4. Start the game through SKSE64, open the pause menu and set Deadly Dragons up under Mod Configuration.

New settings apply only to dragons that spawn after the change, not to those already near you. On a save where you already killed the first dragon, the page suggests waiting 31 in-game days so that the world cells reset.

Pros

  • Every setting starts at the base game’s value
  • New dragon types, or none with the Loremonger Edition
  • Assault adds dragon attacks without changing normal spawns
  • Updated in 2026

Cons

  • Needs SKSE64, SkyUI and the Unofficial Patch
  • Does not work with KS Dragon Overhaul 2
  • New settings skip dragons that are already nearby

Verdict

4.0 out of 5

Set the sliders before your first dragon fight, and pick the Loremonger Edition if you want only the base game’s dragons. It loses a point because it needs SKSE64, SkyUI and the Unofficial Patch, and SKSE64 has to catch up after every game update.
